What is Islam?
The etymology of the word “Islam”, in Arabic, means to submit, obey and surrender. The word “Islam” is made up of three letters, namely S (sin / س), L (lam / ل), M (mim / م) and the root word of “Islam” is “Salama” which means safe.
Islam means to submit to Allah, surrender your desire to follow the will of Allah in order to attain peace in this life and the hereafter (salvation).
Islam is the religion revealed from Allah to all the prophets from the first prophet (Adam PBUH) until the last prophet (Muhammad PBUH) through Angel Gabriel. This includes Noah PBUH, Abraham PBUH, Moses PBUH and Jesus PBUH. The teachings revealed to Prophet Muhammad PBUH is the final and complete revelation. Allah says:
أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلْإِسْلَٰمَ دِينًا
“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as a religion.” (Surah Al Maidah 5:3)
There is no other religion in this world that Allah accepts other than Islam. Allah says:
إِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْإِسْلَٰمُ
“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam” (Surah Ali Imran 3:19)
وَمَن يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ ٱلْإِسْلَٰمِ دِينًا فَلَن يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ
“And whoever desires other than Islam as religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.” (Surah Ali Imran 3:85)
